Meet the Occupational Health team in Stirling

Viking Medical Services is purposefully nimble. The physician who designs your Health Surveillance programme is the one performing the statutory medicals, interpreting borderline results and answering your questions.

Dr Gillian Hawkley

Medical Director and Occupational Health Physician

MBChB (Aberdeen), FRNZCGP, Dip.Occ.Med (Otago)

Gillian grew up on the West coast of Scotland graduating from Aberdeen Medical School in 2002. She worked in Glasgow as a junior Doctor before moving to New Zealand where she completed her specialist General Practice training.

Gillian worked extensively in both General Practice and urgent care in urban, rural and remote environments before moving into the field of Occupational Medicine, working at a private clinic while undertaking her 2 year post-graduate diploma in Occupational Medicine at Otago University.

She is an OEUK Medical Examiner and an Appointed Doctor for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for Asbestos, Radiation and Lead medicals.

Outside of work Gillian enjoys spending time in the outdoors, cycling, and sailing when she can.

Iona Mackay

Registered Nurse

R.N., BA Nursing Studies (Glasgow Caledonian)

Iona is an NHS-qualified Anaesthetic Nurse with over 15 years of post-registration experience. She graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University with a BA in Nursing Studies in 2009, and has since worked across CEPOD, general, orthopaedic, urology, gynaecology, obstetric and ENT theatres at the Southern General, Wishaw University and Queen Elizabeth University Hospitals, alongside community nursing roles across NHS Lanarkshire.

Iona leads Health Surveillance work either on client sites or in our Stirling clinic.

Outside work, Iona runs, shops, and walks her springer spaniel Molly.

Ollie Hawkley

Director - Commercial & Operations

BA(Hons) Sociology (University of Exeter)

Ollie looks after the operational and commercial functions at Viking Medical Services. As well as being hands on in the delivery of multi-site programmes, Ollie is our first point of contact for employers looking to explore comprehensive Health Surveillance. He is regularly on site with clients ensuring the smooth and efficient delivery, and overseeing the operational processes that enable our clients to track progress and that clinical reviews are completed in a timely fashion.

Prior to Viking Medical Services Ollie was a Partner in a global Consulting firm. He has worked throughout the Asia-Pac and EMEA region partnering at Board and Executive level to deliver time critical projects in multi-stakeholder environments. He graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA(Hons) and has competed at Olympic level in Sailing.

Today his competitive and sporting instincts are satisfied riding mountain bikes, day or night, through the Scottish Highlands.

Why Doctor-led matters

Most Occupational Health providers route employers through case managers and technicians, with a Doctor reviewing paperwork somewhere upstream. At Viking, the physician who designs your surveillance programme is the one performing the statutory medicals, interpreting borderline results and answering your questions. That means faster decisions, fewer referrals into a queue, and advice grounded in your actual workplace.

It also matters for compliance. For licensed asbestos work the certificate is only valid if the examining Doctor is individually appointed by the HSE, which is why we say plainly who performs every asbestos medical.
