Who needs a safety critical medical?
A safety critical worker is anyone whose ill health or sudden incapacity could put themselves or others at risk on site. Most principal contractors — and industry frameworks such as Build UK’s health standards — require a current safety critical medical for roles including:
- Plant and crane operators, banksmen and slingers
- Working at height — scaffolders, steel erectors, roofers
- Confined space entry teams
- Workers alongside rail, water or live traffic
- Electrical and mechanical trades on energised systems

What the medical involves
The assessment takes around 30–45 minutes and typically covers medical history, blood pressure, vision, hearing (audiometry), lung function (spirometry), mobility and general fitness for the role. Because our medicals are overseen by an Occupational Health Physician, borderline findings are dealt with by clinical judgement on the day wherever possible — not referred into a queue.

For groups of operatives, we run on-site medical days combined with Health Surveillance where workers need both, with group rates available.

Safety Critical Medical FAQs
How often does a safety critical medical need to be renewed?
Most principal contractors and industry schemes require renewal every 2 or 3 years, or more frequently for older workers or where a condition needs monitoring. Your certificate will state its expiry date, and we can add you to our recall list so it never lapses.
What does a safety critical medical involve?
A typical assessment covers medical history, blood pressure, vision, hearing (audiometry), lung function (spirometry), mobility and general fitness for the role. It usually takes 30–45 minutes and the certificate is normally issued the same day.
What happens if I don’t pass?
Very few workers are simply “failed”. If something needs attention, our Occupational Health Physician reviews the findings and advises on restrictions, adjustments or treatment — the aim is to keep you working safely, and certificates can often be issued with conditions.
Can you do safety critical medicals on-site for operatives?
Yes — for groups we run medical days on your site anywhere across Stirling, Falkirk, Glasgow and Edinburgh, combined with Health Surveillance where workers need both.
